(C//NF) POSITION: Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Pakistan Army. since August 1988. General Beg succeeded General Zia-ul-Haq. Concurrently, Beg has been Colonel Commandant of Sindh Regiment since February 1986.

(C//NF) Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who had been named Acting President upon the unexpected death of General Zia, appointed General Beg COAS because Beg was the senior most Army general and was serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS). [b)(1)
Beg headed the Army delegation that visited Washington, DC, in 1984 and headed it again as the COAS in 1989. [b)(1)
the first COAS to have been trained in a free, independent Pakistan.
