Don’t Overexert When Practicing

Practicing martial arts (or any cultivation) is a matter of persistence, not a quick‑fix pursuit. Simplicity is the ultimate path; a steady, gentle flow is the true way to nurture health.

Why Do Experienced Masseurs Press This Spot First?

Experienced masseurs usually begin a session by loosening, opening, and kneading the shoulders. Why? The first step—relaxing the shoulders—is crucial because the shoulder harbors the “Jianjing” (Shoulder Well) point. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this point corresponds to the “Yongquan” (Kidney Fountain) point on the sole of the foot, much like the mouth of a well and its bottom: they work together, up and down, to sustain the body’s qi‑blood circulation.

We live in an age where AI sings triumphantly, capital chases profit, programmers dream grandly, doctors feel adrift, and patients struggle. We try to conquer disease with data and chips, yet rarely look inward for answers. Perhaps the real cure lies in breathing, sweating, diet, and daily habits. As the Syrian poet Kahlil Gibran once said, “We have gone so far that we have forgotten why we set out.”

The Book of RitesDoctrine of the Mean records: “All things grow together without harming each other; the Way proceeds without contradiction.” This means to bear all things like heaven and earth, to be inclusive and generous, just as the four seasons cycle and the sun and moon illuminate the sky. All phenomena can develop harmoniously without endangering one another; various moral principles can operate simultaneously without conflict. Small virtues flow like rivers everywhere; great virtues nurture all things like heaven and earth.

All Six Senses Are Medicine

Everything the six senses encounter can be medicinal. Using the “eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind” and the corresponding “form, sound, fragrance, taste, touch, dharma” as channels, we fully employ the conditions around us to create an environment conducive to body and mind, allowing the body’s qi‑blood to return to its proper state. In practice, many methods exist; traditionally they are divided into internal and external treatments, but I prefer to call them “inner medicine” and “outer medicine.”
